Community Hall
Po Box 157 Sutton, Alaska 99674
Sutton Community Hall is a large, 40' wide X 70' long, one-story meeting hall located between Jonesville Road and Eska Creek, across the road from Sutton Public Library. This building was constructed and used as the dormitory at the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project between 1927 and 1930. It was moved to Sutton in 1956.
From 1956 till 1999 the Community Hall was the single most important structure in community affairs. For three generations town business, social affairs, youth activities, group meetings, weddings, funerals, ecucational activities, holiday celebrations and family gatherings all took place in the Community Hall. The building is still structurally sound. .
The community hall retains its original look but has suffered since being closed for use in 1999. It was closed when the chimney started to crumble and there was no source of heat. The Civic Club, the local
4-H Club, and individual residents raised money to purchase heaters for the hall but the building started to leak around the chimney and maintenance problems increased faster than residents could deal with them. There have been a couple of outdoor activities since 1999 but the building has not been used.
In January of '05 Randy Hobbs, Hobbs Industries, Inc., approached Sutton Activities Coordination Board, about mantaining and using the hall, so the community can enjoy it once again.
In January of '07 a new non-profit board was formed to maintain the hall. In January the hall was turned over to the Alpine Civic Club Board.
